What is Monkeypox MPX

  • Monkey Pox is clinically termed as MPX.

  • Human monkeypox (MPX) is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV).

  • Monkeypox symptoms usually start within 3 weeks of exposure to the virus.

  • MPX typically lasts for 2 - 4 weeks.

  • Rash

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Exhaustion

  • Headache

  • Swollen lymph nodes

  • Muscle aches and backache

  • Respiratory symptoms (sore throat, nasal congestion)

  • In some cases no symptoms are reported.

Symptoms

Transmission

Close Contact

  • Direct contact with monkeypox rash, scabs, or bodily fluids.

  • Touching objects, fabrics, and surfaces that have been recently used by someone with monkeypox.

  • Contact with respiratory excretion.

Intimate Contact

  • Oral, anal, and vaginal sex or touching the genitals of a person with monkeypox.

  • Body contact like hugging, massage, and kissing.

  • Prolonged close face-to-face contact.

  • Non disinfected sex toys and fetish gear.

Pregnancy

  • The CDC has confirmed that pregnant women can pass the virus through the placenta to their fetus. Data regarding pregnant transmission is limited.

Treatment

  • To limit the transmission, and potential spread of the virus use gauze to cover the exposed rash or infected area.

  • Do not attempt to pop or scratch the rash or lesions.

  • Refrain from shaving the infected area.

  • Clean and keep the infected area dry.

  • Wash hands often with soap and water.

  • Wear gloves if the exposed rash or lesion is on your hands.

  • Wear a mask to reduce respiratory transmission.
